Leading the transition
to a carbon free New York

electric.nyc is a joint initiative led by Hudson Square Properties - Hines, Trinity Church Wall Street and Norges Bank Investment Management - and urbs, supported by NYSERDA. By showcasing solutions and the business case behind decarbonization, we empower all stakeholders to propel the New York real estate industry into the future.

From an electrifying city…

New York - one of the world’s most modern and innovative cities - is dependent on a century-old fossil fuel energy infrastructure. Today it is strained to the limit, harms the climate and does not meet the requirements of the future.

We need to completely transform the way we power, heat and cool New York’s buildings.

A market transformation via large scale electrification has the potential to reduce New York’s real estate emissions by 85% and cut energy consumption in half rapidly. This would lead to an energy transition from fossil to renewables, create much needed green jobs, and support inclusiveness and social justice in local communities.

…to electrifying a city

electric.nyc is a joint initiative led by Hudson Square Properties - Hines, Trinity Church Wall Street and Norges Bank Investment Management - and urbs, supported by NYSERDA.

Our solution presents the opportunity to rapidly electrify New York’s century-old buildings using proven technologies. It enables us to introduce renewable energy within the existing infrastructure to exceed the New York State clean energy goals, while bringing business value to everyone involved.

How it works

We are replacing outdated systems powered by steam and natural gas with smart electric-powered systems. Our solution can be tailored and implemented for each specific block, building - or even floor. The smart systems can connect floors and buildings to each other in “micro-grids", creating a shared, efficient, and circular heating and cooling infrastructure.

The solution provides tenants with a modern, comfortable and silent heating and cooling system at reduced cost, while significantly decreasing carbon emissions.

Showcasing our solution

Our solution is currently being implemented in New York City at 555 Greenwich, with ongoing concept development for 345 Hudson. Follow the development here.

Tried and tested technologies

The technologies applied in our solution have been tested and used in a variety of contexts and climates. See how it is used to support a hospital, an office, and a shopping mall below.

NUS Hospital

At a hospital in the north of Sweden, the integrated heating and cooling system, along with geothermal energy, enables the hospital to reduce their energy usage and save money.

Trekanten office building

An office complex in Danderyd, Sweden now enjoys less maintenance disruptions, reduced carbon footprint, and a silent, comfortable heating and cooling system for their offices.

Frölunda shopping mall

The Frölunda Torg Shopping Mall in Gothenburg, Sweden, has implemented a solution that increases the profitability and competitiveness of the shopping mall while reducing the carbon footprint.
